Signs of Winter Roof Damage on a Commercial Flat Roof

Winter weather can be tough on a commercial flat roof. Heavy snowfall, ice buildup, and extreme temperatures can all lead to roof damage. Snow accumulation could cause roof damage and leaks. Ice infiltration into seams and flashing will cause failure over time. If you see ice forming on your roof, the use of deicing cables or ice-melting products (but never salt) can help temporarily mitigate the problem.

It’s important to be on the lookout for signs of winter roof damage. If you notice any of the following signs of damage, call Mid-South Roof Systems right away to assess the situation and make repairs as necessary.

1. Leaks: One of the most common signs of roof damage is leaks. If you see water stains on your ceiling or walls, that’s a sure sign that your roof is leaking. Even a small leak can turn into a big problem if it’s not fixed quickly. Keep an eye out for stains on ceilings or walls, musty smells, or actual water dripping from the ceiling. Ignoring a leak can lead to serious water damage inside your building, so it’s important to address them as soon as possible.

2. Cracks or splits in the surface: Another sign of winter roof damage is cracks or splits in the roof’s surface. Anything from falling tree limbs to heavy snow accumulation can cause these. Regardless of the cause, it’s important to have the cracks repaired as soon as possible to prevent further damage.

3. Sagging: If you notice your ceiling is sagging or otherwise collapsing, that’s a sign that your roof is in serious trouble and needs to be addressed immediately. Ignoring a sagging ceiling can lead to serious injuries or even death if the ceiling were to collapse completely.

4. Faulty gutters and downspouts: Faulty gutters and downspouts can also cause winter roof damage. If they’re not working properly, they can allow water to build up on your roof, which can lead to leaks and other problems. If you notice any problems with your gutters or downspouts, it’s important to have them repaired as soon as possible to avoid further damage.

The best way to prevent winter weather damage to your commercial flat roof is by being proactive about maintenance throughout the year. Scheduling regular maintenance with Mid-South Roof Systems can maximize the life of your roof and minimize expenses.
